Extra Space Storage has been adding solar to their facilities since 2010 and now has well over 200 locations powered with clean energy. New Energy Equity helped them install solar at their facilities in St. Louis Park, Minnetonka, Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park and Plymouth totaling 854 kW.

The five arrays will produce roughly 1,016,260 kWh per year, enough to power 55 average Minnesota homes. Over 30 years the solar panel system will offset over 14,500 metric tons of CO2, the equivalent of adding 15,500 acres of trees to our forests. Rooftop solar on self storage facilities can offset anywhere from 80% to 100% of the annual electrical usage.

Extra Space Storage CEO, Joe Margolis, understands the financial and environmental benefits of solar. “Solar is now a big part of our corporate sustainability program, and part of our ongoing effort to be good corporate citizens,” said Margolis. “Generating rooftop solar-energy production in lieu of using energy from carbon-emitting sources furthers this commitment and leverages a previously unused asset within our portfolio—our rooftops—and provides cost savings from reduced utility expense.”
